Apply for Meet and Confer
As your new President, you’ve heard me talk about building the front door to MAPE, helping more members find a way into our union. Today, we’re taking the next step in building that door by inviting you to apply to be a member of your agency’s Meet and Confer Committee.
As a union, it is important that we build power in our workplace in a variety of ways. Be it strong negotiations, high membership, or the support we give each other every day, union power comes in many forms. We also have the meet and confer process, which gives us an opportunity to make meaningful changes in our workplaces outside of the formal negotiations process. Quite literally, the committees meet with agency management to confer on issues of mutual concern.
Your Meet and Confer chairs and I have been meeting and talking about the groundbreaking work they are doing to build our power in the agencies. From overtime victories at the Dept. of Disability Services to success stories of workplace safety, diversity and inclusion, Meet and Confer Committees get things done.
Together, we’re asking you to apply to be a member of your agency’s Meet and Confer Committee. Strong committees are diverse in composition – of people, region, job classification – which leads to better representation of the workforce. Successful teams think strategically, act creatively, and speak as one when communicating with management. This means they need you!
Each agency should have a Meet and Confer. Even if your agency doesn’t have one currently, you can apply to be appointed and you’ll have help to get one up and running.
