Winners of Marge Ramsey Scholarships announced
Two members have been selected as this year’s recipients of the Marge Ramsey Scholarship. The Marge Ramsey Scholarship provides awards to union women to assist with their leadership and career development skills.
Local 701’s Elizabeth (Liz) Samuel, an information technology specialist with MNIT, said she plans to use the scholarship funds toward further education. Next month she will be taking the exam for the Project Management Professional and Disciplined Agile Scrum Master certification. “My overall education goal is to attain a project management role in the state of Minnesota and also to help my role as a union steward,” Samuel said.
In addition to being a MAPE steward, Samuel has also served as a local president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. She is also a graduate of the University of Minnesota Union Leadership Program.
Local 1902’s Amy Lennartson, an information officer at Minnesota State University, Mankato, is also a recipient of the Marge Ramsey Scholarship. She is hoping to use the award to attend a national social media and communications conference next March. “As is the case with most workers, I continue to be asked to do more with less in my role as a communications director with a university. I love learning from other businesses and organizations and strategizing how to best implement new ideas that help promote, share and energize others,” Lennartson said.
The Social Media and Communications conference she plans to attend places an emphasis on storytelling. “I believe there is enormous power in storytelling and I want to continue to learn how to best tell and share stories that can engage, mobilize and inspire others here at Minnesota State, Mankato,” Lennartson added.
Marge Ramsey was an active MAPE member from Cambridge and served on the union’s Board of Directors for many years. The Marge Ramsey Scholarship assists union women in both leadership and career development. MAPE’s statewide Organizing Council administers the Marge Ramsey Scholarship program and is responsible for selecting recipients.
