Steward Spotlight: Region 20

For 16 years, Anthony Riesberg has made his professional home in the Minnesota State System of Colleges and currently serves at Riverland Community College. Two years ago he found his place within his union as a steward, and is approaching his one year anniversary as MAPE Region 20’s chief steward.

“I had never been an active participant in the union, so this is a good opportunity to do that,” Riesberg said. “I’m a seasoned employee with historical knowledge and applied skills, and in my current capacity I have the flexibility and I felt it was time for me to step up to the plate.”

Riesberg says being a steward is both rewarding and challenging at times, but he enjoys collaborating with others to advocate for members’ contractual rights.

“I access training and resources for stewards, and greatly appreciate the support I've received from local officers, fellow stewards and MAPE members,” Riesberg said. “I really enjoy helping answer questions that MAPE members have, and I’ve been able to grow in my depth of knowledge for MAPE moving from a steward to a chief steward.”

Riesberg says engaging and maintaining relationships with other stewards is helpful not only for stewards, but also members.

“I find it really satisfying being able to answer someone's question right away based on looking at contracts, understanding contract language and being able to convey options and advice to fellow MAPE members,” he added. “If I don't know, I’ll work with other stewards, business agents or the administration and I’ll find the answer.”

Anyone considering getting involved in MAPE should think about becoming a steward, if you ask Riesberg. “As a steward I greatly appreciate the training opportunities and the support and resources provided by MAPE I’ve found to be beneficial.

“I encourage others to become stewards when I see they’re engaged and passionate about those responsibilities,” Riesberg says. “While MAPE members can celebrate how we overcame challenges in the last few years, we need to be vigilant in our efforts to improve the rights of our members going forward.”
