Region 5 Lunch & Learn Series, Part 2
Title: Region 5 Lunch & Learn Series, Part 2: The Rise and Fall of Industrial Union
Description: Industrial workers provided the energy and momentum which drove Minnesota's labor movement from the 1930s through the 1980s. Two dramatic strikes book end this era -- the Minneapolis Teamsters' strike of 1934 (a labor victory) and the Hormel strike of 1985-86 (a labor defeat). These strikes also ushered in key developments in macro political economy and labor relations -- Keynesianism and the "Welfare State'' at one end and neoliberalism and the tearing up of the "social contract" on the other. We will also consider key laws, particularly the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 and the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947.
