August president's corner

Dear MAPE members,

It is hard to believe we are quickly approaching the mid-point of August, and summer is swiftly drawing to a close. How fast it has gone by! September has always been a month I hold dear. Beyond the autumnal shift, it resonates with the promise of new beginnings reminiscent of fresh school years.

And speaking of new beginnings, we stand on the cusp of one: the upcoming vote on MAPE’s tentative agreement (TA) is more than just a contract negotiation; it’s the opening page of our 2023-2025 chapter. As our union evolves, we’re embracing innovations, increasing transparency in negotiations, and building unity and power in ways we’ve never done before.

Key Dates & Information:

All dues-paying members can cast their vote on the TA from Friday, Aug. 11, through Thursday, Aug. 17. You should receive a voting email from Big Pulse on Aug. 11 at your state work email. If, for any reason, you do not receive this, please email swelect@mape.org.

The Substance of the TA:

Our skilled negotiators, representing every region in our state, have worked with an unwavering commitment to secure impressive gains in this TA with Minnesota Management and Budget. This agreement is groundbreaking, from its historic wage hikes to its promise of a future-ready contract that assures flexibility in the workplace and comprehensive, affordable health care. A detailed breakdown is available at www.mape.org/TAtoolkit

The Board of Directors strongly endorsed the TA, recommending members to support it. A majority vote in favor will mean instant ratification and implementation, amplifying our union’s voice and enhancing Minnesota as an employer. However, should the TA not receive the necessary support, our Board can consider more assertive measures, including a potential strike.

Looking Ahead with Purpose:

But let’s be clear: This TA is much bigger than a contract. It’s about crafting our future narrative. The power of collective action has never been more evident. Individually, none of us could have achieved these gains with MMB. Yet, together, we have made significant strides. And the journey doesn’t end here. As with the fleeting nature of summer, before we know it, we'll be gearing up for our next contract discussions.

Your engagement will determine MAPE’s next chapter. I wholeheartedly believe in our shared strength and the difference we can make together. Let’s keep championing our shared objectives, ensuring our union’s brighter, united future.

In solidarity and anticipation,
Megan Dayton, MAPE President
