Job opening: Business Agent

The Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE) is the premier labor union representing more than 15,000 professionals employed by various agencies across the State of Minnesota and the Minnesota State colleges and universities system. MAPE is currently recruiting for a Business Agent position to help build a powerful organization that workers want to belong to; that can take bold, collective action; and be grounded in democratic, member-driven principles.

We are looking for a Business Agent who is energetic and wholeheartedly committed to building a union that can survive and thrive in a post-fair share world. You would be joining a team with a strong track record in organizing; a commitment to building relationships and investing in leadership development; as well as the ability to initiate workplace and community issue and action campaigns.

MAPE focuses on experimentation (trying new approaches to MAPE’s work so that we can quickly learn what actually works) and capacity building (investing in programs to improve MAPE’s skills and capacity to act in any environment). We are looking for a Business Agent who will build power in the union by developing strong locals and leaders with an emphasis on education, leadership development; organize for action through relational organizing; and lead successful member recruitment drives. Other duties include: contract administration and negotiation; member advocacy including representing members in grievances and arbitrations; supporting and advising members who are subject to disciplinary action including pre-discharge meetings; attending and advising members at meet-and-confer meetings; internal organizing; collaborating with stewards, officers, and committees to ensure effective member representation; supporting union programs that promote membership, member education, local activism and legislative/political/issue action; and other related tasks as assigned.

The successful applicant must have relevant work experience.  Preference given to applicants with: Bachelor’s degree; documented successes in the areas of organizing; leadership development; power-building; member representation and contract administration; demonstrated knowledge of labor relations, labor and contract law, Minnesota’s Public Employee Labor Relations Act and the operations of Minnesota state agencies. Applicants must possess superior communication, problem-solving, be able to work independently and within a team, and be willing to be flexible.

To assure consideration, submit resume and cover letter (preferably by email) no later than July 30, 2020 to:  jobs@mape.org
