MAPE members at the Roller Derby

Local 301 rallied its members to enjoy a unique outing to the Minnesota Roller Derby earlier this month. They advertised the event as “Burgers and Bout” with an option to meet in advance at Burger Moe’s in St. Paul before heading over to Roy Wilkins arena for the bout, the term used for a roller derby match.

“We had a total of 17 people participate, including members and their families,” explained Leya Charles, Local 301 Treasurer and planner of the event. “Sadly, the snowstorm chased some folks away, but we had a great time for everyone who came.”

“Many of the people from the roller derby crew heard about MAPE coming to the event and were so welcoming,” Charles continued. “They even did an announcement at half-time with a special thank you to MAPE members for attending. Afterward, we had several attendees come over to our group to say hi and that they were glad for the work state workers do for Minnesota. We were all decked out in MAPE gear so they could find us.”

Charles said a few members from Education Minnesota and the Carpenters Union came in solidarity and wore MAPE swag.

The theme for the night was “Dino-Sore.” “A highlight was an AFSCME member joining us wearing an inflatable dinosaur costume,” said Charles. “We affectionately called her AFSCME-asourus.”
