If you need help maintaining housing stability or preventing eviction or homelessness, Minnesota Housing has a program to help. The state’s housing finance agency’s COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program for eligible owners and renters has a Dec. 7 application deadline.

The program is designed to cover expenses such as rent, mortgage, utilities or other housing-related expenses that were incurred after March 1, 2020 and are past due.

To apply for housing assistance, you can:

  • Call 211 (Toll Free: 1.800.543.7709; Local: 651.291.0211),
  • Visit 211unitedway.org or
  • Text “MNRENT” or “MNHOME” to 898-211.

Nearly three dozen employees are staffing the program. “Employees are leading, supporting and helping the program so we could get these important resources out faster to Minnesotans who are in need. Many members of the team are MAPE members who are willing to go above and beyond to serve people in Minnesota,” said Ji-young Choi, a housing program and policy specialist with MN Housing.

The 211 helpline has dedicated multilingual staff available to answer questions about the COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Eligibility and additional program information is available at www.mnhousing.gov. Don’t forget to apply by Dec. 7.

Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan announced the $100 million Housing Assistance Program in July and since then, more than 28,000 Minnesotans from across the state have applied.
