Communications series reclassification appeals

In 2023, MMB announced a reclassification study for communications staff across all Minnesota state agencies.

Minnesota DNR completed their reclassification study results in April 2024, which affected 90+ positions. Communications staff expressed frustration with the results, as many felt they were under-classified for the level of work they were currently performing or left out of the study entirely. DNR HR received more than 20 appeals by May 2024, and decisions were distributed in December 2024. Of the appeals, only two resulted in higher classifications.

The DNR-MAPE Meet and Confer team continues to discuss inequities in classifications between Divisions and within Division communications teams. The Creative Services Unit is now being looked at as part of the Communications Classification study.
