Temporary Unclassified (TU) Toolkit Resources to help you navigate your TU status

A year ago, Temporary Unclassified (TU) MAPE members made a decision to work directly with Gov. Tim Walz to address the state’s misuse of the TU designation. In March 2020 Gov. Walz stood before 300 MAPE members and publicly committed to working with us on this issue. Since then, even amidst pandemic response, members have continued this fight to improve the working conditions of TU members.

Out of this work came a new MMB policy, Administrative Procedure 8.2a Designation of Temporary Unclassified Positions, which gives TU workers the right to receive justification for their TU status and to appeal the designation.

You and many of your coworkers have pushed hard to get here, but our work isn’t done yet. Although the procedure lays out steps to appeal your temporary designation, it doesn’t provide specificity or transparency on the criteria for the designation of a position as temporary. We have consistently asked for transparent criteria to curb overuse of these types of positions and will continue to do so. In the meantime, we can work together to test the appeal process as it is written.

Please use this toolkit to see if it makes sense to appeal your TU designation. You can always reach out to a MAPE steward or business agent or more information.
