Third annual Black History Celebration kicks off Feb. 1

Publish Date

The Equity and Justice Black Caucus is presenting its third annual Black History Celebration beginning next Tuesday and you’re invited. The Employee Resource Group is celebrating each workday in February with a lunch hour program with speakers, discussions and films.

More than 3,000 State employees attended last year and this year the programs are also open to county and city employees. Equity and Justice Black Caucus Co-Chair and MAPE Local 1002 President Maurice Wilson is again hosting the series.

Wilson said he is “excited about moving away from Black history that people traditionally hear about like slavery to hearing from today’s Black Leaders” including former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and Minnesota Vikings player Alan Page, Department of Public Safety Assistant Commissioner and former police chief Booker Hodges, Music Director and Producer of the Grammy Award-winning Sounds of Blackness Gary Hines and ERG leader and MAPE member Ellena Schoop.

“We’re creating a celebration where it is our history and we’re going to set the narrative tone from now on,” Wilson added.

“I love that these programs are interactive. I’m proud of the mixture of state employees and others and happy we’re able to give them a platform to speak,” Wilson said. “I’m surprised how eager people are to tell their stories and teach; even people who are paid to do this work will appear at no charge.”
