In preparing for the 2026 legislative session, the Political Council is focusing on two priorities – to expand the Civic Engagement Officer program and encourage participation in precinct caucuses.

James Dirth and Nicole Juan

“The Civic Engagement Officer (CEO) position is open to any MAPE member who wants to help build local political power by organizing participation in precinct caucuses, party conventions and advancing a Working People’s Agenda that reflects our shared goals,” explained Nicole Juan, Political Council (PC) Chair. “We want to have at least one person in each MAPE local as a CEO. Larger locals could have more than one.”

There is no prior knowledge or experience in either organizing or caucusing required to become a CEO. You just need to be committed to learning and willing to try new things to engage members,” James Dirth, Political Council Secretary, said. “The time commitment will be high at times for required trainings and organizing efforts, but lost time will be provided when members have to take time off from work.”

The PC is hosting a training for all the CEOs on Sept. 5 at the MAPE office (lost time and travel reimbursement are available). The Union Power Project (UPP) will lead the training and offer additional training as part of its Leadership Academy for all MAPE leaders.

“Precinct caucuses are the process by which the political parties determine their legislative priorities and agenda, who they will endorse for various levels of office, and who will lead the party,” said Dirth. “By going to caucuses and conventions, MAPE members can make sure elected officials feel accountable to deliver for the public and the public sector, so that we can win the wages, healthcare, time and other benefits we deserve.”

The PC and CEOs will be providing training about the caucus process and encouraging MAPE members to show up. MAPE is coordinating as a coalition of unions to make sure our voices are heard and that labor is represented. MAPE delegates will also have the opportunity on Friday during Delegate Assembly to attend a breakout session about the caucus process.

“Our system is shaped by those that show up; we need our members’ involvement to ensure the working class is represented,” Juan continued.
