MAPE Executive Committee statement on federal indictments related to Operation Metro Surge
MAPE is deeply concerned about the federal indictments of 15 Minnesotans accused of actions during Operation Metro Surge. We urge everyone to remember those charged, many of whom are union siblings, are presumed innocent unless proven guilty and join with our community, faith and labor colleagues uniting to stand up for what is right.
An injury to one is an injury to all, and we will not sit idly while attacks on unions and union members continue. We stand in solidarity with people who were trying to protect their communities and support ongoing efforts to defend against federal overreach. These indictments are allegations, not proven facts, and past cases like these have often fallen apart in court.
During Metro Surge, tens of thousands of Minnesotans peacefully stood up for their neighbors and exercised their constitutional rights. Efforts like these should not be met with intimidation.
Minnesotans have been widely recognized for their peaceful response and commitment to protecting their communities – values that remain at the heart of our democracy.
Minnesota’s Labor Movement was awarded the AFL-CIO’s George Meany-Lane Kirkland’s Human Rights Award for union and union members’ actions during Operation Metro Surge. Additionally, Minnesota and its residents have received global attention, including the people of the Twin Cities were recognized with the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award® and the City of Minneapolis and its residents have been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, underscoring the significance of these events and the response they inspired.
MAPE will continue to stand up for workers, civil liberties and the rights of all Minnesotans.
