MAPE endorses Duluth Right to Repair

The Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE) Supports the Duluth Right to Repair Initiative. MAPE believes in working-class, people-centered policies, including those that create affordable, accessible, and equitable housing for all Minnesotans.

MAPE's two endorsed candidates for Duluth City Council, Diane Desotelle and David Clanaugh, are public supporters of this measure, along with other labor partners in the state.

In a city of 40% renters, Duluth is looking to help renters maintain safe and healthy housing when landlords do not make repairs in a timely manner. If after fourteen days, landlords do not correct situations after receiving notice, this ordinance would allow renters to hire a licensed contractor for repairs up to $500 or half of one month's rent, whichever is greater. The renter will then be able to deduct this amount from their rent or receive a reimbursement and must provide a receipt to the landlord.

Duluth Right to Repair gives renters a tool to get quality, timely fixes for common repairs and creates a path for working-class Minnesotans to maintain safe, and livable housing.
