Macalester College staff demand union election, join forces with MAPE
Shoreview, Minn. – After months of organizing, Macalester College staff filed for a union election on Friday with the National Labor Relations Board, declaring their intent to join the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE). The move comes after Macalester’s administration declined a request for voluntary recognition, despite clear majority support.
The new bargaining unit includes non-faculty, non-supervisory staff who are seeking a stronger voice in shaping their workplace conditions and ensuring the college lives up to its stated values.
“Macalester staff built a thoughtful, disciplined organizing effort and they didn’t back down when management refused recognition,” said MAPE President Megan Dayton. “They know their worth, and they know a union will help ensure they’re treated with the dignity and respect they’ve earned. Now, we’re ready to win this election and welcome hundreds of higher ed professionals into the largest state government union in Minnesota.”
MAPE already represents professional employees across the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system and has a long track record of securing wage gains, improving working conditions, and building worker power.
“What's happening at Macalester reflects a rising tide of worker action,” Dayton said. “People are demanding more than platitudes. We’re demanding a seat at the table. Our campaign is building lasting power and shaping a workplace that honors both values and people.”
