Members assembling hygiene and winter weather kits

On Saturday, about 20 MAPE members gathered for a MLK Day of Service to assemble hygiene kits and winter weather supplies for the unhoused population in Minneapolis.

“We were surprised and thankful to see so many people come out on a Saturday to donate and also assemble kits for those in need,” said Bobbie Miller-Thomas, MAPE Organizing Council member. “We had so many volunteers that the event finished much quicker than we anticipated.”

The event, sponsored by MAPE’s Organizing Council, was open to anyone who wanted to do something in honor of the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For some, that meant donating products, for others it meant showing up to pack the hygiene and warm weather kits. For many involved, it was both.

“We had a MLK documentary playing while we worked hard on assembling kits,” Miller-Thomas said. “Many were thankful for the opportunity to serve the community as well as the information they learned from the documentary.”

Members donated and packed more than 20 winter kits and 50 hygiene kits that will help those in need through Agate Housing and Services. Miller-Thomas said she hopes to make this an annual MLK Day of Service event for MAPE.
