MAPE Statement on ICE raids from Political Council Chair Nicole Juan

Reports of recent immigration enforcement activity in Minnesota have raised concerns for many state employees, and those who call Minnesota home. It is illegal and abhorrent for our government to target people based on their religion or ethnicity. The federal government is currently targeting our Somali colleagues and neighbors – the latest in a line of attacks on many immigrant communities. These military-style raids are cruel and designed to terrorize families. Let us be clear: Somali Minnesotans are a vital part of our communities and our workforce.

Many immigrant and first-generation employees have reported feeling increased stress during moments like these. We stand in solidarity with our coworkers and will continue to press agencies for clear communication and firm adherence to workplace protections.

The 2025 MAPE Delegate Assembly – our highest governing body – overwhelmingly passed two agenda items that address the actions that are currently taking place: the “In Defense of Immigrant Rights” policy outlines MAPE’s stance and direction regarding immigration enforcement, and the 2026 Legislative Platform was endorsed with an updated plank to support legislation prohibiting state and local law enforcement from using state resources for the purpose of civil immigration enforcement.

We stand alongside our immigrant coworkers and neighbors. These raids are not about crime. These raids are not about safety. They are about Washington sowing division and causing more chaos. Higher prices at the grocery store and gas pump and skyrocketing health care costs will not be fixed by deportations or continued attacks on public services our most vulnerable neighbors rely on. Our government should work to improve the lives of its residents – all of us – instead of making life difficult for the working class.
