Seeds of Solidarity Take Root at MAPE Members from across the state came together to craft union-themed seed art that showcases creativity, community and support for Minnesota workers.

MAPE members are showcasing their support for Minnesota workers to fairgoers by crafting something truly unique — one seed at a time. 

Two dozen MAPE members from nine locals gathered at the Saint Anthony Park Library in St. Paul on July 18 for a seed art-making event. 

Participants created MAPE- and union-themed seed art featuring messages such as "Stronger Together" and "Minnesota Strong." The unique artistic medium uses natural materials including seeds, grains, beans, lentils and stems to create intricate designs. The finished artwork will be displayed at the MAPE booth in the Labor Pavilion during the Minnesota State Fair before finding a permanent home at MAPE headquarters. 

"We thought our booth could use something new and exciting this year," said Susan McNeeley, treasurer of Local 1101 and co-organizer of the event. "I really appreciate everyone who came and supported each other. No matter what MAPE does, there are always people there to participate and help the union fight for what Minnesota workers deserve." 

Adding to the day's creativity was State Auditor Julie Blaha, whose award-winning Minnesota State Fair seed art earned her a reputation as the "queen of seed art." She shared tips and encouragement with first-time artists throughout the event, helping participants transform everyday seeds and grains into colorful works celebrating solidarity and public service. 

The vibrant pieces created during the two-hour event will be on display at the Minnesota State Fair from Aug. 27 through Labor Day, Sept. 7, inviting fairgoers to celebrate the creativity, collaboration and collective strength of Minnesota's union members.
