National Rabies Awareness Day is Sept. 28 in honor of the French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur, who developed the first effective rabies vaccine.
"There is no known cure once you start to have symptoms of rabies, and so that's why we care so much when we have people exposed to rabid animals or potentially rabid animals, because our only option is to give rabies shots to people before they show any symptoms," Klumb said.
