Local 901 Training Reimbursement Policy

Purpose

Local 901 recognizes that there are certain unique skills involved in organizing as a union. We wish to support members involved in running union activities who would like to improve their skills relevant to their union activities.

Eligibility

  • The person getting the reimbursement must be someone who has been a MAPE member for at least 6 months.
  • The MAPE member must be directly involved and actively engaged in supporting union activities of some sort (i.e. running meetings, having 1:1s, being a negotiator, etc).
  • The training must be relevant to the union work the member does or will do to contribute to strengthening our union. The pre-approval form will ask the member to describe how this training is relevant to the union work they do or will do.

Policy

  • Local 901 funds can be used to reimburse members for training fees (such as registration) and costs associated with travel to and from the training (such as train/plane tickets, hotel). Local 901 will not reimburse for lost time (the member will have to take vacation, flex, etc).
  • The training must be directly relevant to improving the union work the member is doing or plans to do (i.e. union-related facilitation training to help run union meetings or training on having organizing conversations)
  • Any given member can only receive up to $500 in training-related reimbursement per calendar year.
  • The reimbursement request must be submitted at least month before the deadline to register so that the request can be reviewed at the Executive Committee monthly meetings.
  • Reimbursement must be pre-approved by the Local 901 Executive Committee prior to the training.
  • A MAPE local Expense Reimbursement Form with a receipt(s) must be submitted to acquire the reimbursement. We recommend the reimbursement form be submitted within a month of attending the training.
  • Out of State travel: for travel that includes going outside of Minnesota, the reimbursement of this travel via local funds must also be approved by the MAPE Board of Directors, in addition to a majority vote by Local Officers. This brings our policy into line with statewide MAPE policy. Out of state travel can include international travel.

Process

  • Requests for pre-approval will be submitted via the Local 901 Training Reimbursement Approval Form. [googledoc to be made] The executive committee will vote to approve or deny the request. A majority vote in favor will allow the reimbursement to go forward.
  • For out-of-state travel, after approval from the executive committee, the request must then be sent to the Board of Directors for approval. We encourage members requesting support for out-of-state travel to submit their request as soon as possible and at least 8 weeks in advance of the travel since the Board of Directors meets monthly.
  • After pre-approval and after attending the training, reimbursement for the training will be requested via a MAPE Local Expense Reimbursement Form. A receipt is required.
