Background

  • MAPE members have worked to provide exceptional services to Minnesotans for 45 years.
  • On March 25, Gov. Walz emailed all state employees, calling them back into the office for half their working hours beginning June 1.
  • At no point was MAPE involved in these discussions or return-to-the office planning process. If we had, we would have:
    • Shared how the option to telework has helped recruit and retain many qualified, extraordinary state workers, especially in Greater MN.
    • Raised concerns about infrastructure capacity, parking and access to additional childcare.
    • Partnered on a plan that continues supporting employee flexibility without disrupting the business needs of our agencies.

Call to action
This unilateral decision by our governor is reminiscent of the disruptions our counterparts on the federal level are facing.

We are asking you as legislators to stand with state employees and tell Governor Walz to rescind the order and engage in meaningful negotiations with labor representatives. Coercing state workers from across the state to come back into the office and solve downtown St. Paul's budget issues is ridiculous and disrespectful.
