Job opening: Communications coordinator
The Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE) is the premier labor union representing nearly 15,000 professional employees by various agencies across the State of Minnesota, and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. MAPE is currently accepting resumes for a communications coordinator to help support a powerful organization that recruits new members through our strength and ability to take bold, collective action while grounded in democratic, member-driven principles.
MAPE’s desired candidate is energetic, works well in a team setting, is an independent thinker, brings new ideas to the table and thinks outside the box. This person must be dedicated to building a strong, democratic union while promoting the welfare of the membership and advancing the interests of all governmental employees through all means of communications.
As a union, MAPE focuses on capacity building, leadership development, improving working conditions for our members and improving public policy making and electoral politics in Minnesota. MAPE is committed to relational organizing as the primary approach to build power around our initiatives. This person must possess and demonstrate outstanding writing and editing skills, have strong attention to details while maintaining a clear vision of MAPE’s mission, have exceptional interpersonal skills, work well independently and as part of a team while interacting with key stakeholders throughout the union, have excellent skills in Microsoft Office, and have experience managing and updating web content (Drupal programming) and social media in order to promote and support MAPE’s key priorities and functions. Candidate should be proficient at photography and processing photos, and the use of Adobe products, especially Photoshop and Acrobat. Knowledge of HTML and source coding helpful.
The successful applicant must have relevant work experience with preference given to applicants with: demonstrated knowledge of communications, public relations, IT, web content management, labor unions; demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting; demonstrated superior communication and problem-solving skills; and knowledge of working with local media outlets. Applicant should possess at least a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field and come with relevant work experience (preferably in a union, public sector, community-based or social justice organization setting).
