The meeting of Local 1903 was called to order at 12:03pm on 8-20-08 at the Braille School in Faribault, MN. The July minutes were summarized & approved.
OLD BUSINESS
Case Manager Schedule Change
A summary/history of this proposed change was provided. The Case Managers submitted a document expressing our concerns & possible other solutions to Administration. To date, we have not had a response from Administration. Further discussion was held in regards to our present job descriptions & the proposed new expectations of dining facility coverage. Kelly Ahern, our Business Agent will contact Cindy Kragenbring, the Chair of MAPE DOC Meet & Confer. A discussion also was held about how AFSCME views individuals from MAPE working in AFSCME security positions. Brent Garrick will contact the President of AFSCME to perhaps schedule a meeting. Kelly Ahern will check on break/meal times when we are required to work a 10 hr shift.
Information was shared that there are AFSCME staff shortages which may be partially driving this initiative. There are presently 4 staff pregnant & 14-15 out on long term medical issues. Staff with 10 years or more are being forced overtime.
NEW BUSINESS
1.) Vice President Patty Rux and Treasurer Carrie Budahl are at new officers training today.
2.) The Department of Education won't release money for the Braille & Talking Book library position. It is Federal money but is still frozen. They gave money back last year that was not used. The Department of Education won't hear the appeal from them on this matter. They have been 3 positions short for at least 2 years. Kelly Ahern will look into this matter & affected individuals will contact her.
BUSINESS AGENT
1.) The Negotiations Committee is in place but have not started yet. Any suggestions for contract changes, expanded benefits, etc. can be sent to Peter Rutherford or Rene Perrance from our Local or directly to Mitch Wallerstedt, Regional Director.
2.) There are no grievances being addressed presently.
3.) Kelly Ahern will check with other facilities in regards to their schedules & caseload numbers. Case Managers who have contacts at other facilities will also provide input.
FINANCE REPORT: We have a current balance of $4,294.00. This is less than last month due to two members attending Intermediate Steward Training.
ATTENDANCE DRAWING: Brian Knutson would have won $80.00 had he attended our August meeting! Plan to attend our September meeting for a chance to win $90.00, enjoy a free meal & stay informed!
The next meeting of Local 1903 will be held at noon on 9-17-08 at the Braille School, 400 SE 6th Ave in Faribault, MN.
