1301 Local MAPE Meeting Minutes – May 19th, 2009
Hennepin North WorkForce Center, Brooklyn Park

23 members were present, including Carla Leintz, region 13 Director and Rick Nelson, MAPE Business Agent.

The meeting was called to order by Tammy Miller-Hess, Local 1301 President.

MSP to approve meeting minutes for April.

Tammy reminded members that the local has previously approved to pay for lost time and mileage for those traveling to and from meetings.  Expense forms can be found on the MAPE website and often are available at the meeting.  Please fill them out and return them to Local 1301 Secretary Marci Jasper.  They can be mailed to 1201 89th Ave NE, Suite 220, Blaine, MN 55434 or faxed (763)785-3365.

The local membership is at 60.73%.

At out last meeting nominations were opened for Delegate Assembly and alternates and for Region 13 Director.  Cathy noted that she received one nomination for Carla Leintz for Region 13 Director and no nominations for DA. There were two members who expressed interest in being a part of the DA.  If you are interested please contact Tammy Miller-Hess at tmillerhess@yahoo.com   Again, the Delegate Assembly meets September 25th and 26th.

The Affirmative Action Committee co-chair will be invited to our July meeting to discuss the committee’s role and how it can help members.

Region 13 Director Carla Leintz reported the following:

  1. The Ralph Cornelia Professional Development Scholarship was approved in for up to $5,000 dollars.  This scholarship is in honor of Ralph Cornelia, who was a strong union advocate and is available for individuals or groups looking at short term training for help on the job.  Other MAPE scholarships are also available; please go to the website for rules and applications.
  2. Make sure co-workers know where to get information regarding lay off situations and the benefits/resources available to them (MAPE business agents, Employee Rights Committee).
  3. Beginning steward training is coming up August 12th and 13th.  More information and sign up can be found on the MAPE website.

Lois Freirmuth, Region 13 negotiator, gave summarized the contract proposal that has been accepted by the Governor’s team and is recommended for acceptance by the Board of Directors.  Highlights include:

  1. No furlough under the current proposal
  2. Wage scale at 0% for both years of the contract
  3. Step increases in the second year of the contract
  4. Healthcare is at 0% increase in first year and 6.7% increase for family care in the second year.  In addition, a $125 Bennie Card will be issued in the second year.
  5. No increases in co-pay for the length of the contract.

Ballots will be mailed out on May 19th, and must be returned by June 19th.  They will be counted on June 22nd.

It was noted that nothing in the contract will prevent layoffs. 
The early retirement incentive bill is still alive in the legislature (15yrs of service, must be age 58 to 65 yrs old, 3 yrs of health insurance would be paid as is currently).

The next meeting will be held on June 16th at 12pm at Hennepin North Workforce Center, 7115 Northland Terrace, Suite 100, Brooklyn Park, MN 55428

Shannon Marks won the $25.00 door prize.
